The world-renowned architect Boris Magaš, a distinguished member of the Croatian Academy of the Arts and Sciences (HAZU), has passed away in Zagreb today, aged 84.

Magaš authored the Poljud stadium, built in 1979, arousing great interest in the architectural public, particularly sports architecture. Its design has been most influential on architectural trends and the appearance of stadia around the world.

Other landmark Magaš projects have also made their mark on Croatian architecture in the latter half of the 20th century. The hotel resorts Haludovo and Solaris are particularly well known, however his master work is considered to be the Vjeverica Kindergarten and Daycare Center in the Zagreb neighborhood of Mihaljevac. His major works with a religious theme include the Saint Nicholas church and monastery in Rijeka, and the Dominicans' church in Zagreb named for the Blessed Augustine Kažotić.

Boris Magaš was a professor emeritus of Zagreb University and the Secretary of the Visual Arts Department at HAZU. He was born in Karlovac in 1930. Upon obtaining his architectural degree at Zagreb's Technical Faculty in 1955, he earned his PhD in urban planning and architecture.

He taught at the Faculty of Construction at Rijeka, before being named to the chair of Architecture at Zagreb University. He was inducted into the Yugoslavian Academy of the Arts and Sciences in 1988. In 1990, he was named Advisor to the President of the Republic on all matters of architecture and urban planning. He has been a full member of the Croatian Academy of the Arts and Sciences since 1991.

The numerous awards he has won over the years include a "Vladimir Nazor" lifetime award and the "Viktor Kovačić" award he won in 1993.
